Six pieces, six dates. Each one changed something about how bags are worn. Most are no longer available in stores in their original version — we find them, authenticate them, and put them back into circulation.

1955

2.55 — Chanel

February 1955. Gabrielle Chanel attaches a chain to a bag and frees women's hands. The quilting, the Mademoiselle clasp, the burgundy lining: everything is already there.

The original model gave way to the Timeless in the 1980s. The Reissues, numbered re-editions, only return in dribs and drabs.

135 items available, from €650

1984

Birkin — Hermès

Born from a conversation on a plane between Jane Birkin and Jean-Louis Dumas, who sketched the tote bag she dreamed of on an airsickness bag.

Forty years later, it still cannot be freely purchased in stores. The second-hand market remains the only way to get one without waiting.

70 pieces available, from €9,630

1997

Baguette — Fendi

Silvia Venturini Fendi imagined a bag worn under the arm like a baguette. She invented the designer bag as a collector's item and launched the short shoulder bag trend.

Hundreds of versions were produced — embroidered, beaded, sequined. Most have never been reissued.

34 pieces available, starting from €850

2000

Saddle — Dior

John Galliano reinterprets the horse saddle as a city bag, complete with its metal stirrup and asymmetrical curve.

Retired from collections for fifteen years, it returned in 2018. Models from the first period can now only be found second-hand.

69 items available, from €590

2003

Monogram Multicolore — Louis Vuitton × Takashi Murakami

Marc Jacobs invited Takashi Murakami to repaint the monogram in thirty-three colors on a white or black background. The collaboration between a trunk maker and a contemporary artist became a model of its kind.

The line was discontinued in 2015. Speedy, Alma, Rita, Cherry Blossom: nothing has been produced since, and the value increases every year.

30 items available, from €590

2016

GG Marmont — Gucci

Alessandro Michele brought back the double G from the seventies archives and placed it on chevron quilting. The design became the symbol of the house's renewal.

The creative director left Gucci in 2022. The colors and materials from his seven years will not be continued.

73 pieces available, starting from €170

All six models, together. Over 400 pieces available, each authenticated in our Paris offices.

Maison Off is GABY PARIS's journal. Here, we decipher authentication codes — Chanel serial numbers, Hermès date stamps —, tell the stories of fashion houses and their pieces, and follow the second-hand market and the brand's events.
